Term 3: Dance on Film

In Term 3, our dancers step into the captivating world of dance on film.

This term uniquely culminates in a movie theatre premiere of dances specifically choreographed for the big screen. The curriculum’s film pieces are set by guest choreographers renowned for their creative work in the film industry. The presentation also includes a variety of student created pieces.

As our dancers explore the realms of dance on film, they experience the pace in which professional commercial dancers need to learn choreography and execute it consistently for the purposes of editing and continuity.

Not only do the dancers perform 3 new pieces on location and in costume but also gain firsthand experience in the intricate processes and language cues of dancing on set. This differs from that of the preparation and presentation of a piece set for a live audience. This term also allows for guided mentorship for students to flex new interests of choreographing, directing, editing, or camera operations. These mentors are an extension of JJ’s collegues in the film industry ranging from writers, show runners, directors, 1st ADs and editors.

The culmination of this term is a cinematic spectacle of dance on film showcased on the big screen.

The dance on film focus illuminates how the artistic instincts and potential of our dancers can expand beyond the role of a “performer” and also serves as a launchpad for their professional careers.

This term equips dancers with the skills to perform in front of the camera and provides essential portfolio building materials necessary for casting and the process of applying to be represented by an agency. These building tools include the footage from the term’s multiple projects, in addition to the artistic renderings from a professional dance photo shoot.

This term also supports the industry processes of creating reels, acquiring professional photos, and navigating the landscape of acquiring agency representation.

"I am always happy to present them at castings to directors and producers. When I am lucky enough to hire a JJ DANCE ARTS dancer, I know they will knock it out of the park.”

  • Amy Wright: Choreographer of Family Channel's The Next Step, Prime Video's The Boys, and Netflix's Dare Me
